Rubí Theater Company

The Rubí Theater Company was an intergenerational ensemble of mostly Latinx artists, writers, and educators.

The company was co-founded by Dr. Patricia Herrera, Alicia Díaz, Jennifer Fleming, José Joaquín Garcia, and Amarelys Pérez in 1997 and continued to produce work until 2011. The company was founded to participate in and interact with the surrounding community. Over the years, the Rubí Theater Company worked with artists, poets and musicians in the community to put on many unique performances and experiences. Here are some highlights over the years.

Over the years, the Rubí Theater Company produced and performed original works by individuals within the company and other Latinxs living in the United States. They mentored and promoted emergent Latinx artists—playwrights, choreographers, hip hop dancers, rappers, and singers. Although the artists came from different places (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, and New York), and from all walks of life, they were all hungry to discover new ways of understanding and affirming their places in the larger social fabric of New York City and our nation.

The Rubí Theater Company worked with teenage artists to create art that would be socially relevant to a future generation, and their work was energized with the beauty of poetry, hip-hop language—both physical and verbal—and the dynamism of our Latinx urban culture. Their work brought to the surface issues of colonialism, slavery, racism, immigration, environmental injustice, education inequities, poverty, gender discrimination, and other conditions and experiences that threatened the survival and existence of our communities.

Over the years, Dr. Herrera has also performed with other artists and musicians. Here are a few recordings that she participated in.
